Barney Bears nursery Barking was the first site to open in 2004. We are Ofsted registered offering places from 3 months to 2 years of age and for children aged 2-5 years.
Barney Bears Nursery Barking was last inspected by Ofsted on 19th December 2022 and we were rated ‘Good’. The nursery offers full and part-time places from 7:30 am to 6:30 pm, Monday to Friday (except bank holidays). The nursery is open for 51 weeks a year and closes 1 week at Christmas.
The nursery offers freshly prepared meals on the premises and rotates a four week nutritional menu (menus). The nursery is annually checked by the environmental health protection agency and continues to be praised for its outstanding levels of cleanliness and organisation of our food preparation areas.
Within the borough of Barking and Dagenham we are nominated to be a host setting. This means that Barney Bears is highly commended for its organisation, cleanliness, and our systems which can be viewed by other nurseries within in the borough as an example for other nurseries.
What we Offer – Barney Bears at Barking offer two separate areas in both age groups where the children can be cared for we rotate the layout of both the main and baby areas regularly to offer a variety and a new prospective on the space.
The Baby Room – Cares for children under the age of 2 years in a peaceful, clam environment where we provide a comfortable homely space where parents/carers and staff can bottle feed and settle the babies. We follow the babies personal routine by working closely in partnership with the parent/carers, using different sounds, colors and textures to stimulate the babies’ curiosity and desire to explore the world around them.
We offer a creative area with messy activities for them to explore and experiment. We also use this area for our heuristic play session which is for the babies to explore natural sensory materials.
We have a Quiet Cot Area where the babies and children can rest or sleep. We also provide a separate nappy changing facility. The babies participate in weekly dance movement sessions carried out by a professional music theatre, along with regular sensory activities.
We provide real experience for the children to play and explore such has babies using their sense with the jelly, hay, flour, real fruits and vegetables etc. We extend this through our outdoor experiences through our outings and trips (events).
Garden – Outside play is paramount to the child’s development we ensure our babies experience garden play each day (weather permitted).
Our Main Room offers fun and excitement for the older children from 2 to 5 years through a variety of activities. Our 2 to 5 year olds spend their time between the creative area, main room and garden. The main room activities are split into areas of construction for building and dismantle, home corner for Role Play and areas for table top and floor base activities which include mark making, maths and understanding of the world, ICT, following the Early Years foundation Stage. There is also an area where children can relax for story time or develop their reading skills.
Pre-skills are activities that are planned and tailored to our individual children to focus on skills which encompass personal, emotional and social skills and learning linked to two specific areas in the EYFS curriculum: Mathematics and Literacy. We endeavor to support and encourage children at their own pace with the aim of school readiness.
The Creative Area offer sand and water, painting, drawing and the opportunity for the children to experience a wide range of other messy materials and activities. The children follow a flexible daily routine which includes, cooking activities, dance and movement, pre-school skills activities, ICT, Physical and more.
Garden – Our garden is used for all ages to explore safely and enjoy outdoor play though out the year which helps to improve their areas of development such as balancing beams and tyres. Barking’s garden has a discovery area where children can grow and explore the environment by looking at insects. The area has tactile boards and a shaded area.
Buggy Park – Parents are able to leave their buggies within our secured buggy park.

A fixed deposit is required, to secure a nursery space:
- Hourly Rate = £7
- 2 days = £100.00
- 3 – 5 days = £200.00
- We also require a £25 admin fee on confirmation of nursery space.

The nursery is closed for one week at Christmas. The fees are based on a 51 week year or 39 weeks for term time. Funding will be deducted from your child’s nursery fees.
